Grahamstown born and raised Linda Yopi was working as a waitress at the then named Bella Vista restaurant before she applied for work at Rhodes nine years ago. Since then she has worked her way up from a general cleaner to the position of Supervisor for Central Cleaning Services in Residence dining halls.
“I check the food servings and make sure things are running smoothly in the dining hall and that everything is clean” said Linda.
“I prefer working here because its full time work with benefits and there are a lot of chances in terms of development. If you want to do a training course, you can do it and then get better at what you do,” said Linda.
South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. This August, GAP is publishing a micro-profile a day on women working in Grahamstown in 2015.
